Located in Grimes County, Texas, the factory will be built on the site of the former Gibbons Creek Reservoir coal plant. The first phase of the project involves an initial investment of $16.8 billion and is expected to create at least 3,000 jobs. With a planned footprint exceeding 100 million square feet, Terafab is intended to become the largest chip manufacturing facility in the world. According to Elon Musk, the project is "the most epic chip-building effort" in history, combining multiple stages of semiconductor production in one location.

The Drive for Vertical Integration

The project arrives as Tesla and SpaceX face escalating compute demands that Musk has claimed will eventually exceed global production capacity. While the companies are pursuing long-term independence, they remain dependent on external partners for immediate needs. Tesla currently maintains critical relationships with TSMC and Samsung, the latter of which is involved in a $16.5 billion deal to produce AI6 chips.

Terafab is designed to eliminate these dependencies by producing specialized AI chips for a diverse hardware ecosystem. The primary targets include Tesla's Optimus humanoid robots and the upcoming Cybercab autonomous vehicles, as well as the infrastructure required for SpaceX's planned space-based data centers.

Industry Implications

If completed, Terafab would signal a fundamental shift in the semiconductor landscape, moving Tesla and SpaceX from being high-volume chip customers to primary producers. By establishing "terawatt-scale" compute power, the companies aim to reduce their reliance on foreign foundries and insulate their supply chains from geopolitical volatility.

This pivot toward total vertical integration suggests that the companies view AI hardware as a core competency rather than a commodity.
