The U.S. Department of Commerce has awarded $500 million to SandboxAQ, an Alphabet spinout, to implement physics-based AI designed to address vulnerabilities in the semiconductor supply chain, with a specific emphasis on rare earth elements. Additionally, the CHIPS Manufacturing USA Institute (SMART USA) has received a $285 million federal investment as part of a larger $1 billion public-private partnership. This project aims to modernize semiconductor design and packaging through the use of digital twin technology. To maintain long-term security, the CHIPS Act further allocates $500 million annually for the administration to establish secure supply chains and safeguard semiconductor technology.
The Push for Domestic Sovereignty
Historically, the U.S. semiconductor industry has maintained a heavy reliance on East Asian manufacturing, particularly through TSMC in Taiwan and Samsung in South Korea. This concentration of production created significant vulnerabilities, highlighted by the supply chain collapses during the pandemic and escalating tensions with China. The CHIPS and Science Act was designed to incentivize the return of this manufacturing to U.S. soil, ensuring that the production of essential components is not subject to the volatility of a single geographic region.
