YC-backed Meteoric uses drones to clear clouds over solar farms
Cambridge engineers aim to boost solar power generation by up to 30% using chemical-free drone fleets.
Meteoric, a startup backed by Y Combinator, is developing autonomous drone fleets to dissipate low- and mid-altitude clouds over utility-scale solar farms. The technology aims to increase the amount of sunlight reaching solar panels by mechanically altering water droplets without the use of chemicals.
Founded by University of Cambridge engineers Mete Karslioglu (CEO) and Eric Nilsson (CTO), the company targets clouds between 1 and 5 kilometers in altitude. According to Meteoric, this technology could increase annual solar power generation from existing assets by 10% to 30% across major U.S. grid regions. The company has already demonstrated a working prototype that dissipated an artificial cloud by 13% during cloud-chamber tests.
The Economics of Cloud Clearing
Solar power efficiency is frequently hampered by weather patterns, as low and mid-level overcast clouds can significantly reduce incoming sunlight. While weather modification techniques such as cloud seeding exist, they have traditionally relied on expensive helicopters or aircraft. Conventional seeding aircraft can cost upwards of $2,000 per hour to operate, making them economically unviable for routine solar farm maintenance.
Meteoric's approach leverages electric drones and AI-driven weather forecasting to slash these costs. The company estimates the operational cost of its drone fleets at $30 to $60 per hour, providing a scalable alternative to traditional aviation-based weather modification.
Industry Implications
If the technology proves successful at scale, it offers a method to improve the return on investment for existing solar infrastructure. By boosting the output of current installations, operators could increase energy yields without the need for additional land or the installation of new panels. This is particularly significant given current industry bottlenecks regarding rising material costs and lengthy interconnection queues for new grid projects.
Future Milestones
Meteoric is currently working toward its first large-scale cloud-clearing flight, scheduled for 2027. Beyond solar optimization, the founders have set a more ambitious long-term goal: mitigating the impact of extreme weather. The company plans its first storm operation for late 2028, with the ultimate objective of reducing the intensity of severe storms and hurricanes.
