The U.S. Air Force is moving to decouple software and hardware development cycles for its munitions to ensure weapons can adapt to enemy threats in real-time. This shift aims to replace slow, periodic update cycles with a model capable of deploying software changes multiple times a day.

During the Air and Space Forces Association’s Air, Space and Cyber Conference on September 14, 2026, Air Force and industry leaders emphasized that static software is a liability in dynamic combat environments. Bryon Kroger, founder and CEO of Rise8, stated that the service and its industry partners must move toward deploying updates "multiple times a day, where we can get an update to the field on demand as soon as we need it."

The Need for Adaptation

Traditionally, munitions software has been tied to hardware procurement, resulting in updates that lag months behind the actual deployment of the physical weapon. This lag creates a vulnerability in high-intensity conflicts where adversaries can develop countermeasures faster than the U.S. can patch its systems. Industry leaders pointed to the war in Ukraine as a primary model for this necessity, noting that the conflict has demonstrated the critical importance of a continuous cycle of adaptation on the battlefield.

Strategic Implications

This transition represents a fundamental pivot in defense acquisition, moving from a "build-then-field" approach to a continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) model for lethal hardware. In the context of modern electronic warfare, the ability to update a targeting algorithm or patch a vulnerability in hours rather than months can determine whether a weapon system succeeds or fails.

Brig. Gen. Robert Lyons III, portfolio acquisition executive for weapons at the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, noted that as the service works to replenish its munitions stockpiles, it must balance capability, capacity, and cost with adaptability. He emphasized the need to produce these systems at the speed and scale required for future conflicts.

Future Outlook

While the Air Force has signaled its intent to move toward on-demand delivery, the full implementation of this CI/CD pipeline across all munitions platforms remains a work in progress. Observers are now watching how the service will integrate these rapid software drops into existing logistics and security protocols to ensure that "on-demand" updates do not compromise system stability or security in the field.
