Anthropic Launches C2PA-Based Verification Tool for Claude Media

The new tool allows users to check for provenance metadata in images and audio files processed by Claude.

Anthropic has released a new content verification tool designed to help users determine if media files were generated or processed by its AI. The tool, available at claude.com/check-content, marks a step toward greater transparency in AI-generated media provenance.

The verification system operates by scanning files for metadata established by the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA). This C2PA metadata is injected by the artifact-presentation system specifically when files are downloaded via the web chat. The tool supports a wide array of file types, including image formats such as JPG, PNG, GIF, WEBP, TIFF, HEIC, AVIF, SVG, DNG, and JXL, as well as audio and video formats including MP4, MOV, AVI, WAV, MP3, M4A, and FLAC. Users can upload files up to 100 MB for verification.

The Push for Provenance

This launch comes as AI labs face mounting pressure to combat misinformation and adhere to emerging global regulations, such as the EU AI Act. The C2PA standard is an industry-wide effort to create cryptographically secure records of a file's origin and history, allowing third parties to verify the authenticity of digital content. By adopting this standard, Anthropic is aligning with a broader movement to move away from opaque detection methods toward explicit, standardized provenance.

Transparency vs. Detection

Anthropic's decision to utilize C2PA metadata represents a specific philosophy on AI transparency. Rather than relying on invisible watermarking—which often attempts to hide signals within the pixels or frequencies of a file—the company is opting for explicit metadata. This approach provides a clear audit trail for users who wish to verify a file's origin, though it differs fundamentally from the text-based watermarking techniques often discussed in AI safety circles.

Limitations and Outlook

Despite the broad range of supported media, the tool currently has notable gaps. It does not support text-based documents, such as PDFs, meaning the verification is limited strictly to rich media files. As the industry continues to refine these standards, the effectiveness of metadata-based verification will likely depend on how widely C2PA is adopted across other platforms and whether users prioritize these transparency markers over more aggressive, invisible detection systems.
