Anthropic's Claude Opus 5 Makes Agentic Coding Cheap. That's the Problem.

Performance at a Third of the Cost

Opus 5 outperforms Fable 5 on the OSWorld 2.0 computer use benchmark while costing approximately one-third the price. On ARC-AGI-3, the model scores 30.2%, roughly three times higher than the next-best competitor (GPT-5.6 Sol at 7.8%). Fable 5 remains Anthropic's recommendation for the most advanced long-horizon autonomous work.

For scientific applications, Opus 5 shows a 10.2 percentage point improvement over Opus 4.8 on internal organic chemistry benchmarks.

The Infrastructure Shift Nobody Asked For

The real story isn't the specs—it's what cheap intelligence enables. When high-capability AI becomes affordable enough to run autonomously for hours or days, the operational model changes fundamentally. According to analysis from The New Stack, this necessitates a shift from long-running containers to ephemeral microVMs for security isolation, and from simple API logging to "semantic circuit breakers" that can halt agents before they spend thousands of dollars in an infinite loop.

This marks a transition from AI as a chatbot to AI as an unsupervised operator. Opus 5 is "designed to work on programming tasks for much longer without constant human input," The New Stack reported.

Safety Trade-offs

Anthropic introduced Automatic Fallbacks in beta, which reroutes prompts that trip safety classifiers on Opus 5 to Opus 4.8 to prevent pipeline failures. The company expects safety and cyber classifiers to activate approximately 85% less often on Opus 5 compared to Fable 5—a reduction that improves workflow continuity but also means fewer guardrails interrupting potentially problematic agent behavior.
