Aptera has entered into a $44 million partnership with Launch Design to manufacture its first solar electric vehicle. The agreement, announced on August 20, marks a strategic pivot in how the company intends to scale its unique vehicle from prototype to mass market.
Under the terms of the deal, Launch Design will utilize its existing mass production facilities to create large sub-assemblies for the vehicles. These components will then be shipped to Aptera's facility in Carlsbad, California, where the company will handle final assembly and validation. Beyond manufacturing capacity, the partnership grants Aptera access to Launch Design's international supply chain for components and tooling, a move intended to lower overall production costs.
Scaling Without the Gigafactory
For years, Aptera has faced skepticism regarding its ability to fulfill thousands of vehicle reservations given its limited infrastructure in Carlsbad. The automotive industry is notorious for "production hell," where startups struggle to transition from a working design to a scalable assembly line. By leveraging an established manufacturer, Aptera is attempting to bypass the massive capital expenditures typically required to build a proprietary factory from the ground up.
A New Blueprint for Niche EVs
