Asahi Linux Adds Official Support for Apple M3 Series Chips

The community project now supports M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max hardware, though GPU and power limitations remain.

The Asahi Linux project has officially expanded its support to include Apple’s M3 series SoCs, bringing the Linux kernel to the latest generation of Apple Silicon. This milestone allows users of M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max chips to run a native Linux environment on their hardware.

Support has been merged into the project's installer, though it is currently restricted to "Expert mode." Users can initiate the process via the command `curl -L https://alx.sh/ | EXPERT=1 sh`. According to the Asahi Linux Blog, several core hardware components are already functional, including the webcam, internal microphones, WiFi, and Bluetooth. USB connectivity is also supported at speeds up to 10 Gb/s, and the project has successfully implemented hardware-accelerated video decoding, specifically including AV1 support. However, the M3 Ultra found in the Mac Studio is not yet supported.

The Engineering Challenge

Asahi Linux is a community-driven effort dedicated to porting the Linux kernel and a full distribution to Apple Silicon. This latest expansion follows the successful deployment of support for the M1 and M2 chipsets. To achieve M3 compatibility, the project spent years reverse-engineering Apple's tightly integrated system-on-a-chip (SoC) architecture. This process requires navigating proprietary boot sequences and complex firmware that Apple does not officially document for third-party operating systems.

Impact on Users

While the addition of M3 support is a technical victory, the current experience is tailored for developers and enthusiasts rather than general users. The primary hurdles are GPU acceleration and power management. Specifically, the lack of Display Coprocessor (DCP) support means that system sleep functionality is currently unavailable. James Calligeros of Asahi Linux warned users not to expect "performant or power-efficient 3D acceleration right now," indicating that the hardware's full graphical potential remains untapped.

Future Roadmap

Looking ahead, the project is working to stabilize the M3 experience for a wider audience. According to the Asahi Linux Blog, the team aims to remove the Expert mode requirement for installation in time for the Fedora Linux 45 beta release. Until then, the M3 support serves as a functional foundation for those willing to navigate the caveats of early-stage hardware enablement.
