Asahi Linux Adds Official Support for Apple M3 Series Macs

The project expands native Linux compatibility to M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max chips, though graphics and power limitations remain.

The Asahi Linux project has officially extended native support to Apple’s M3 series SoCs, integrating the capability directly into its installer. This milestone allows Linux to run on a broader range of modern Apple hardware, though the project warns that the experience is currently tailored for enthusiasts rather than general users.

Official support now covers M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max chips across the MacBook and iMac lineups. According to the Asahi Linux Blog, the current build successfully supports several core hardware functions, including internal microphones, webcams, WiFi, Bluetooth, and USB speeds up to 10 Gb/s. The project has also implemented hardware-accelerated video decoding, which includes support for the AV1 codec. However, the Mac Studio featuring the M3 Ultra chip remains unsupported at this time.

The Path to M3 Compatibility

Asahi Linux is a long-term reverse-engineering effort designed to enable open-source operating systems to run natively on Apple Silicon. After establishing stability on M1 and M2 hardware, the team had to navigate the specific architectural shifts introduced with the M3 series. Much of this recent work focused on overcoming challenges related to GPU drivers and the Display Controller Processor (DCP) to ensure the OS could communicate effectively with Apple's proprietary hardware.

Current Limitations and Trade-offs

Despite the expanded hardware support, the installation process is not yet streamlined for the average user. Installation currently requires the use of "Expert mode," which must be triggered via a specific command-line string: `curl -L https://alx.sh/ | EXPERT=1 sh`.

Beyond the installation hurdle, the system faces significant performance gaps. James Calligeros explicitly warned users: "Do not expect performant or power-efficient 3D acceleration right now." The lack of robust 3D acceleration and the absence of sleep support mean that while the system is functional for development and testing, it is not yet a viable primary daily driver for most users.

Future Roadmap

Asahi Linux intends to refine the user experience by removing the "Expert mode" requirement for M3 installations. The project aims to have this restriction lifted in time for the Fedora Linux 45 beta release. Until then, the project continues to iterate on power management and graphics drivers to bring the M3 experience closer to the stability seen on earlier Apple Silicon generations.
