Bitmoor Launches WhatCable to End the USB-C 'Cable Lottery' on macOS

Bitmoor has released WhatCable, a macOS menu bar application designed to diagnose the actual hardware capabilities of USB-C cables. The tool aims to eliminate the guesswork associated with identical-looking cables by providing real-time verification of performance specifications.
WhatCable identifies data transfer speeds, power delivery capabilities, and display paths by reading macOS system reports. Rather than relying on often-confusing product packaging, the app pulls data directly from the system to tell the user exactly what the connected cable supports. The software is signed, notarized, and available in 19 languages. It is compatible with Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 14 or later and is offered in both an open-source and a Pro version.
The USB-C Identification Problem
USB-C has become the universal physical standard for connectivity, but the underlying specifications vary wildly. A single cable design may support USB 2.0 speeds while another supports Thunderbolt 4, and charging capacities can range from 60W to 240W.
