Cursor AI Swaps Dollar-Based Cost Tracking for Token Counts on Individual Plans
The AI code editor removed granular spending data from its usage page to reduce user confusion, sparking backlash over transparency.
Cursor AI has removed dollar-based cost tracking from the usage page for users on individual plans, replacing financial figures with token counts. The move has sparked criticism from developers who rely on real-time spending data to manage their budgets.
According to reports on the Cursor Community Forum, the spending graph and per-request cost information are no longer visible for individual accounts. While individual plans now display token amounts, enterprise plans retain dollar-based visibility due to their pooled usage structure. Users who exceed their included plan limits via on-demand usage can still find dollar figures, but only by accessing the Cost column within CSV exports.
Cursor representative kevinn stated that the change was a deliberate design choice. The company aims to avoid confusion because the internal value of "included usage" often exceeds the actual cost of the user's subscription plan. By shifting to token counts, the company intends to align the display with the way individual plans are structured compared to the pooled nature of enterprise accounts.
This change removes immediate financial transparency for a significant portion of the user base. For those utilizing on-demand usage, the lack of a granular usage window means they can no longer track the cost of specific requests in real time. This is particularly disruptive for teams with shared on-demand caps who need to monitor per-user or per-model spend to optimize their operational costs.
Community reaction has been sharply negative, with users describing the token-based display as "completely useless" and calling for transparency regarding per-request billing. It remains to be seen if Cursor will reintroduce a financial toggle for individual users or if the company will maintain the current token-centric approach to simplify its billing presentation.
