Formas has launched Cartesian, an AI-powered 3D modeling tool designed to integrate generative intelligence into professional architecture and product design. The platform aims to move AI-generated geometry from simple visual concepts into functional design assets.

Cartesian enables users to generate 3D models through three primary input methods: text prompts ("Say it"), hand-drawn sketches ("Sketch it"), and image uploads ("Drag it in"). Unlike many generative AI tools that produce static meshes, Cartesian emphasizes high precision and full editability. According to Formas, users can modify individual objects within a scene—such as adjusting a single chair in a room—without altering the rest of the model. To support professional workflows, the tool allows these models to be exported to industry-standard CAD software, including Rhino and SketchUp.

The Gap in AEC Design

The architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry has historically relied on manual CAD modeling, a process that is precise but time-consuming. While the broader generative AI market has seen rapid advancement in 2D imagery via tools like Midjourney and basic 3D meshes through platforms like Meshy or Tripo, a significant gap has remained for professional-grade modeling. Architects and product designers require structural editability and precision that standard generative AI typically lacks, making it difficult to move a conceptual AI image into a buildable technical plan.

Implications for Professional Workflows

By bridging the gap between rapid ideation and production-ready geometry, Cartesian could significantly accelerate the early stages of the design process. The ability to maintain individual object control means that AI is no longer just a mood-boarding tool, but a starting point for actual construction. This product launch follows a significant capital injection for the company. Formas.ai recently secured US$3.98 million in an oversubscribed pre-seed funding round led by Vertex Ventures Southeast Asia & India. The funding is earmarked for the development of an AI-native creative workspace specifically tailored for the AEC industry. As Formas continues to build out this ecosystem, the industry will be watching to see how deeply these AI-generated assets can integrate into the complex, multi-layered requirements of structural engineering and large-scale architectural execution.
