The industry standard for AI interaction is shifting from temporary chat sessions to persistent agent identities. This evolution allows AI entities to maintain memory and access rights across different interactions, effectively moving the technology from a tool-based model to a teammate-based model.
Three primary implementations are leading this transition: Grok Bot, Claude Tag, and Hermes Bot Mode. These systems implement durable identities that carry memory and permissions across sessions. Grok Bot, developed by xAI, operates on its own cloud computer and is capable of performing background work. Anthropic’s Claude Tag functions as an always-on AI teammate integrated into Slack, providing a shared identity across an entire organization. Meanwhile, Nous Research has introduced Hermes Bot Mode, which converts standard AI profiles into a roster of named agents, each equipped with its own specific memory, skills, and roles.
The End of the Ephemeral Session
Traditionally, AI interactions have been session-based. In this legacy model, context is lost once a chat ends, or it must be manually restored by the user in a new thread. This creates a friction point where the AI must be re-contextualized and re-authorized for every new task. The industry is now moving toward "agentic" workflows.
