Jujutsu Creator Martin von Zweigbergk Joins East River Source Control as CTO

Martin von Zweigbergk, the creator of the open-source version control system Jujutsu (jj), has been appointed as Chief Technology Officer of East River Source Control (ERSC). The move brings one of the industry's most recognized experts in version control system (VCS) architecture to a venture-backed effort to modernize how code is stored and managed.

As CTO, von Zweigbergk will lead the engineering of ERSC's next-generation version control platforms. Despite his new corporate role, he will remain a core maintainer of the open-source Jujutsu project. ERSC, which launched in 2025 and is backed by Amplify Partners, is specifically designing its platforms to serve a software industry being reshaped by artificial intelligence.

The Ceiling of Modern Version Control

For over a decade, Git has maintained a near-monopoly on version control, but the industry is hitting a performance wall. As software scale increases and AI begins to generate and manage code at an unprecedented volume, the underlying storage layers of existing systems are facing significant performance ceilings.

Von Zweigbergk's career has focused on these exact bottlenecks. He previously contributed to Git and worked on Fig, a Mercurial client designed for Google's massive Piper monorepo. While his work on Jujutsu focused on improving the local developer experience on the laptop, he argues that the server-side remains the primary constraint. According to von Zweigbergk, the remote server in most workflows is still Git, which possesses a ceiling that products at scale hit quickly. He believes the storage layer must change to match the modern model, noting that this specific architectural work is better supported by a company than an open-source project alone.

Implications for Enterprise Engineering

This appointment signals a strategic shift toward rethinking the fundamental storage architecture of version control to accommodate the scale of modern monorepos and the automation introduced by AI. By bringing in a specialist with von Zweigbergk's pedigree, ERSC is positioning itself to commercially replace or augment the Git-based backends currently used by enterprise-scale engineering teams.

Benjamin Brittain of ERSC noted that the technical challenges many engineering teams are only now beginning to encounter are problems von Zweigbergk has been addressing for over ten years. Brittain stated that having von Zweigbergk lead the engineering team provides ERSC with a "wholly different level of technical capability as an organization."

Industry observers will be watching to see how ERSC's new architecture differs from the distributed model popularized by Git. While the company is building for an AI-driven landscape, the primary goal remains solving the server-side storage limitations that hinder large-scale products. The success of this venture will depend on whether ERSC can convince enterprise teams to migrate their critical source-of-truth storage away from the established Git ecosystem to a new, AI-optimized platform.
