Kitea Health Cuts Firmware Development Time by 25% With Parasoft Testing
The New Zealand medtech firm used automated static analysis and unit testing to accelerate the verification of its FDA-designated breakthrough ICP sensor.
New Zealand-based Kitea Health has significantly accelerated the development of its implantable intracranial pressure (ICP) sensor by integrating Parasoft’s automated testing tools. The move allows the company to verify safety-critical firmware more efficiently as it pursues regulatory approval for a device targeting hydrocephalus care.
By implementing Parasoft C/C++test, Kitea Health reduced its firmware development time by 25%. The company utilized automated static code analysis, unit testing, and code coverage reporting to ensure software reliability. The development team achieved 99 to 100 percent code coverage, executing approximately 1,000 test cases in under 30 minutes.
The Burden of Hydrocephalus
Hydrocephalus, a condition characterized by the abnormal buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain, affects approximately one million people in the United States. The condition places a massive strain on the healthcare system, costing over $2 billion annually in the U.S. alone. Current medical management often relies on crisis response; however, the Kitea System—originally developed at the Auckland Bioengineering Institute in New Zealand—aims to shift this paradigm toward proactive, data-informed care through remote ICP monitoring.
Safety in Implantable Firmware
For implantable medical devices, firmware reliability is a critical safety requirement rather than a mere performance metric. The ability to automate the verification of safety-critical code against industry standards, such as MISRA, CERT, and CWE, allows medtech firms to meet stringent regulatory demands without sacrificing speed. The performance of modern medical devices depends increasingly on the quality of their underlying software, making automated verification essential for patient safety.
Path to Market
The efficiency gains in software verification support Kitea Health's broader regulatory strategy. The Kitea System has already received Breakthrough Device Designation from the FDA, a status intended to expedite the development and review of devices that provide more effective treatment for life-threatening or irreversibly debilitating conditions. As the company moves forward, the focus remains on maintaining high reliability standards while reducing the time-to-market for this life-improving technology. By streamlining the verification process, Kitea Health can ensure that its investigational sensor meets the rigorous safety benchmarks required for permanent implantation while maintaining a competitive development pace.
