Akilan and Miguel have launched MarbleOS, a graphical user interface (GUI) designed specifically for AI agents. The project seeks to transition AI interaction from a text-heavy chat experience to a visual workspace where files, tools, and tasks are explicitly visible and manageable.

MarbleOS replaces the traditional chat-centric interface with a spatial environment. Instead of a linear stream of messages, the system provides a workspace that surfaces the agent's outputs and the tools it uses. The creators cite the 1984 Macintosh, NeXTSTEP, and the pioneering work at Xerox PARC as the primary inspirations for this visual approach.

The shift from terminal to GUI

For several years, the primary way humans have interacted with large language models and AI agents has been through the chat window. While these interactions use natural language, the underlying experience often mirrors a Command Line Interface (CLI). In a chat-based system, users must prompt the agent to perform specific actions or call tools, and the resulting artifacts are often buried within a long conversation history.

Akilan and Miguel argue that this current paradigm is limiting. "Before GUIs, interacting with a computer was limited to strange terminal commands," the creators noted, explaining that users previously had to memorize specific syntax, paths, and parameters to be effective. They suggest that current AI interactions are similarly "terminal-like," requiring users to know exactly which capabilities to invoke via text.

Implications for agentic workflows

As AI agents evolve from simple chatbots into autonomous productivity tools, the need for a spatial interface becomes critical. A visual operating system allows users to oversee complex workflows and manage state—such as spreadsheets or research briefs—without relying solely on a text stream. By making the agent's internal state and artifacts visible, MarbleOS aims to provide a level of oversight and organization that is impossible in a standard chat thread.
