A debate over the future of artificial intelligence in mathematics has shifted from technical rigor to social critique. Lior Pachter has published a response to a letter signed by 25 Fields medalists, arguing that the mathematical community's own history of exclusion makes it an imperfect gold standard for AI alignment.

The controversy began after OpenAI announced a claimed solution to the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem. In response, the 25 Fields medalists authored a letter titled "A Severe Misalignment of AI in Mathematics," asserting that the goals of AI companies are fundamentally misaligned with the mathematical community's pursuit of conceptual understanding and insight. The signatories emphasized that rushed announcements are no substitute for the deep insight and formal write-ups required by the discipline.

A History of Exclusion

While Pachter agrees that AI companies are currently misaligned with the goal of conceptual understanding, he contends that the mathematical establishment itself is flawed. In his critique, "Align AI and Mathematics—to Something Else," Pachter argues that the profession has a documented history of failing to nurture students and ideas due to systemic exclusion, sexism, and antisemitism.

To support this, Pachter cites several historical examples of professional failure. He points to Juliusz Schauder, who struggled with antisemitism and was denied university positions. He also highlights Olga Ladyzhenskaya, who was passed over for the Fields Medal in 1958 despite her foundational contributions to the Navier-Stokes problem. Additionally, Pachter notes that Karen Uhlenbeck faced hiring discrimination based on her gender following the completion of her PhD in 1968.

The Alignment Dilemma

This critique transforms the conversation from a technical dispute into an ethical one. Pachter argues that if AI is simply aligned with the existing norms and hierarchies of the mathematical community, it risks replicating the same biases and exclusionary patterns that have historically marginalized talented researchers.

By highlighting these systemic failures, Pachter suggests that the goal should not be to align AI with the current professional establishment. Instead, he advocates for aligning AI with universal intellectual virtues, such as intellectual generosity and proper attribution, which he suggests have been inconsistently applied within the field's own hierarchy.

Future Implications

The tension between the result-oriented pace of AI development and the traditional rigor of academia remains unresolved. While the Fields medalists seek to protect the integrity of mathematical insight, Pachter's intervention suggests that the "integrity" of the community is itself a subject for scrutiny. The industry must now consider whether the ideal version of "mathematical alignment" is found in the current academic structure or in a set of values that transcends it.
