Meta Partners With Newsmax to Expand AI Training Data

The social media giant is integrating current and archived reporting from the right-wing outlet into its AI systems.

Meta has entered into a content partnership with Newsmax, a right-wing media outlet, to integrate its reporting into the company's artificial intelligence systems. The agreement allows Meta to utilize both current reporting and archived content from Newsmax to support AI-driven queries across its suite of apps and devices.

Under the terms of the deal, Newsmax content will be used to enhance the responses generated by Meta's AI tools. Newsmax CEO Chris Ruddy stated he is "pleased to work with Meta to help ensure users have access to timely, high-quality journalism through AI technologies." This partnership follows a pattern of similar agreements Meta has secured with other right-leaning organizations, including Fox News, The Daily Caller, The Washington Examiner, and News Corp.

The Data Race

This move comes as Meta aggressively scales its AI infrastructure to compete with rivals like OpenAI. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has committed hundreds of billions of dollars toward data centers to power large language models, such as Llama. To fuel these models, Meta is striking high-volume data acquisition deals with a diverse array of media organizations. While the company has targeted right-wing outlets, it has also established partnerships with mainstream publications, including CNN, USA Today, and People Inc., to ensure a broad dataset for its platforms, which reach over 3.9 billion monthly users.

Reliability Concerns

The partnership is drawing scrutiny due to Newsmax's history of factual reliability. The outlet has previously promoted conspiracy theories regarding the 2020 U.S. election, leading to significant legal repercussions. Newsmax has settled defamation lawsuits with Dominion Voting Systems for $67 million and Smartmatic for $40 million, totaling $107 million in combined settlements.

Industry analysts warn that including sources with a history of misinformation in AI training sets could have systemic consequences. Because Meta's AI tools are integrated into Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, there is a risk that AI-generated responses could propagate ideological distortions or inaccurate information on a massive scale, potentially amplifying the same types of claims that led to the outlet's legal settlements.

Future Implications

As Meta continues to build its AI ecosystem, the focus will likely shift toward how the company filters and weights the information it acquires. While the company is securing the legal right to use this data, the technical challenge remains in preventing the AI from presenting biased or debunked claims as objective fact. Observers will be watching for how Meta manages the tension between acquiring vast amounts of training data and maintaining the factual integrity of its AI outputs.
