Metir plc has achieved its first commercial placement of its PFAS detection technology with Veralto in the United States. The move marks a significant step in the company's effort to shift environmental contaminant monitoring from the laboratory to the field.

The platform utilizes patented chip-based mass spectrometry to provide point-of-need detection of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The technology is specifically designed for rapid, field-deployable monitoring to bypass the delays and costs associated with traditional offsite laboratory testing. The Shift to Field Monitoring

PFAS, commonly referred to as "forever chemicals," are pervasive environmental contaminants that resist natural degradation. Historically, detecting these substances has required a cumbersome process of collecting samples and transporting them to specialized facilities. This lag time often hinders immediate decision-making during remediation efforts and complicates compliance with evolving environmental standards.

Metir's approach miniaturizes the mass spectrometry process, allowing for high-precision analysis at the site of contamination. To further enhance the platform's capabilities, the company is developing machine learning AI-enabled software to improve data processing and detection accuracy. Additionally, Metir has reached an agreement to secure full ownership of the proprietary PFAS measurement intellectual property originally developed in collaboration with Swansea University.

Real-time monitoring is becoming critical for sectors with high water-usage and strict purity requirements, such as semiconductor manufacturing and municipal water management. As the United States sees growing demand for rapid monitoring and the European Union tightens water quality legislation, the ability to detect contaminants instantly can significantly accelerate remediation timelines.
