Juliet Chinenye Duru, an ICT lecturer at Abia State University and software developer, has launched two AI-driven platforms designed to solve specific regional challenges in Nigeria. By focusing on localized data and linguistic needs, Duru aims to bridge the gap between generic global AI models and the practical realities of West African agriculture and education.
One of the primary tools, AgriAI Insight, is a crop yield prediction platform tailored for Nigerian farmers. The system utilizes a FastAPI backend deployed on AWS Lambda and a React Native mobile application to provide data-driven insights. According to Duru, the goal is transparency in agricultural technology; she stated that farmers or extension officers using tablets should understand the reasoning behind a prediction rather than simply accepting a number.
Bridging the Educational Divide
Parallel to her work in agriculture, Duru developed NaijaLearn-AI, a multilingual AI tutor specifically designed for the Nigerian university curriculum, with a focus on STEM and ICT. To ensure accessibility for a diverse population, the platform supports five languages: English, Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, and Nigerian Pidgin.
This linguistic inclusivity is a direct response to the barriers faced by local students. Duru noted that millions of Nigerian learners do not lack ambition, but rather lack tools built with their specific reality, bandwidth, curriculum, and languages in mind.
