Norwegian Startup Orbify Debuts 'Inception-Style' Warped 3D Navigation Maps

Norwegian startup Orbify is developing image processing software that warps 3D map models into a curved surface to streamline digital navigation. By mimicking the bending cityscapes seen in the film Inception, the technology provides users with a unified spatial perspective that eliminates the need to switch between different map modes.

The system combines a street-level perspective in the foreground with an overhead aerial view in the distance. According to co-founder Karsten Huitfeldt, the goal is to remove the tradeoff between these two views by "continuously combining both in one view, with perspective close to the user, bending progressively toward an aerial/top view farther out." To demonstrate the concept, Orbify has released a web-based interactive demo built on the PlayCanvas Engine using WebGL2/WebGPU and incorporating Gaussian splatting.

The Spatial Context Gap

Traditional navigation interfaces typically force a fragmented experience, requiring users to toggle between 2D top-down maps for orientation and 3D street-level views for local recognition. This constant mode-switching can disrupt a user's mental model of their surroundings. Orbify seeks to bridge this gap using non-linear 3D geometry, allowing the user to maintain spatial context without losing sight of the broader route. The approach is heavily influenced by spatial design, drawing on Huitfeldt's professional background as an architect and project manager at Snøhetta.

Implications for Navigation UX

If validated, this interface could redefine the user experience for automotive and mobile navigation by removing fragmented interfaces. By merging perspectives, the technology aims to reduce the cognitive workload required to relate a ground-level view to a map. However, the practical adoption of such a system depends on whether these cognitive gains outweigh the risks of visual distortion. Industry analysts note that the primary hurdle will be determining if the warped perspective induces visually induced motion sickness in users.

Path to Patent

Orbify is currently conducting research to determine if this warped interface actually improves navigation efficiency compared to traditional methods. The company has already filed a pending EU and international patent (PCT/EP2026/058725) for the "Image Processing System," which covers the specific bending algorithm, the shader, and the camera setup required to achieve the effect. It remains to be seen if the research will support a full commercial rollout into consumer GPS software.
