Nvidia's Huang: AI Agents Will Drive 10x Semiconductor Boom

The GPU giant is backing its prediction with over $500 billion in commitments to secure memory and data center capacity through 2028.

The semiconductor industry must expand five to ten times over the next decade to support an explosion of AI agents and robots, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said this week, outlining a future where autonomous systems—not humans—become the primary consumers of compute.

"Instead of a billion people using computers, we will have 100 billion agents and billions of robots all using computers," Huang said. "Computers are being built not just for people to use, but computers are being built for computers to use."

The shift from generative AI to "agentic AI"—systems that perceive, reason, plan and act—requires a fundamental redesign of backend infrastructure. To secure the physical supply chain, Nvidia announced a strategic partnership with South Korea's SK Group valued at more than $500 billion, focused on next-generation HBM4 memory and AI factory deployments.

Supply Chain Lock-In

Nvidia has disclosed $119 billion in supply-related commitments to secure packaging, power, land and memory, according to company filings. The SK Group deal anchors a broader push to eliminate High-Bandwidth Memory as the bottleneck for the next phase of AI evolution.

SK Telecom plans to build a 2-gigawatt AI data center using Nvidia's Vera Rubin architecture and SK Hynix's HBM4 memory, with the facility expected online by 2027. Separately, Nvidia is investing $1 billion in South Korean tech giant Naver Corp, while Brookfield provides up to $9 billion to expand AI data center capacity from 55 megawatts to 200 megawatts by 2028.

The investments signal that physical infrastructure—not algorithmic breakthroughs—is now the limiting factor in AI deployment. If Huang's prediction holds, current data center and chip capacities would become obsolete, requiring massive expansion in power, memory and packaging.

A Golden Age for Korea

Huang framed the South Korean investments as transformative for the region. "This is truly the beginning of a golden age for Korea," he said.

The country's dominance in memory manufacturing—particularly SK Hynix's lead in HBM4—positions it as a critical node in the AI supply chain. The 2-gigawatt SK Telecom facility alone represents one of the largest AI data center commitments announced to date.

Industry analysts note that the transition to agentic AI changes the economics of compute consumption. Unlike human users who interact with systems intermittently, autonomous agents run continuous background loops, demanding persistent session memory and redesigned rate-limiting infrastructure.

The semiconductor industry's required 5-10x growth rate would far exceed historical expansion patterns, even during previous boom cycles. Whether the physical supply chain can scale at that pace remains the central question for the next decade of AI development.
