Orbify Launches Curved-Space Navigation to Merge Aerial and Street Views

Orbify has introduced a navigation visualization technology that uses a proprietary warping algorithm to bend 3D map models onto a curved surface. The system creates a single 2D image that simultaneously provides a perspective street-level view for local context and an aerial overhead view for global route orientation.

According to the company, the technology fuses these two distinct perspectives into one coherent frame. To protect the interface, Orbify has filed a pending European and international patent application (PCT/EP2026/058725). The system is designed as a drop-in SDK, allowing it to integrate with existing rendering stacks and map data pipelines without requiring the use of proprietary map data. A current web demo of the technology utilizes Gaussian splat scenes and the PlayCanvas Engine for its 3D rendering.

The Cognitive Load Problem

Modern vehicle navigation typically forces users to toggle between 2D overhead maps and 3D perspective or street-level views. Orbify argues that this constant mode-switching destroys spatial context and increases the cognitive load for drivers, who must mentally reconcile two different visual representations of the same environment. The development of this curved-space visualization has been made possible by the recent rise of open geospatial data and rendering capabilities typically found in high-end game engines.

Industry Implications

By providing both immediate local cues and long-term route orientation in a single glance, the technology aims to significantly reduce driver distraction. This positions Orbify to target a high-value market consisting of automotive OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers. These companies are currently in a competitive race to differentiate their in-cabin Human-Machine Interface (HMI) experiences as software-defined vehicles become the industry standard.

Future Deployment

Beyond passenger vehicles, Orbify is targeting marine navigation and defense applications where maintaining simultaneous local and global situational awareness is critical. While the core warping technology is confirmed via the company's SDK and public demos, the broader adoption will depend on how seamlessly the SDK integrates into the rigid safety and certification pipelines of automotive manufacturers.
