ovlive Launches Unified Real-Time Transit Map for Belgium

An independent project aggregates live data from the country's four major transport operators into a single visual interface.

A new independent project called ovlive has launched a comprehensive live map that aggregates public transport data across Belgium. The tool provides a single-pane view of the national transit network, offering real-time tracking and delay information for buses, trams, metros, and trains.

The platform integrates data from Belgium's four primary transport operators: De Lijn, STIB-MIVB, TEC, and NMBS/SNCB. To achieve this, ovlive employs a hybrid tracking methodology. It utilizes direct real-time positions for STIB-MIVB and TEC, while for De Lijn and NMBS/SNCB, the map uses calculated positions based on GTFS schedules corrected by GTFS-RT delay data. Beyond transit, the map incorporates additional data layers, including aircraft positions via adsb.lol, Velo Antwerpen bike-share availability, and parking garage occupancy in Ghent.

The Fragmentation Challenge

Public transport in Belgium is historically fragmented, split across several regional and national operators. While these individual entities provide their own data, commuters have traditionally navigated multiple different systems to track their journeys. ovlive centralizes this experience by leveraging open data standards, specifically the General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) and GTFS-Realtime. For rail tracking, the project integrates Infrabel's track geometry to ensure trains are mapped accurately along their physical paths.

Impact on Commuters and Data Integrity

By unifying these disparate streams, ovlive solves a significant fragmentation problem for both daily commuters and transit enthusiasts. The project provides a visual interface that allows users to see the entire Belgian system in one place, reducing the friction of multi-modal travel. Furthermore, the project maintains a high standard of data integrity by remaining transparent about its methodology. By explicitly distinguishing between "observed" real-time positions and "calculated" positions, ovlive provides users with a clear understanding of the accuracy of the vehicle locations displayed on the map.

Project Status and Outlook

Despite its comprehensive scope, ovlive is entirely independent and is not an official application of the Belgian government or any of the transport operators it tracks. As a community-led effort, it relies on the continued availability of open data feeds from the operators. Future observers will likely watch how the project scales its data layers and whether other regional utilities or transport services are integrated into the map to further expand its utility as a national infrastructure dashboard.
