The new Git hosting platform rejects US jurisdiction and AI training to offer a legal sanctuary for European code.
Pushin.eu has launched as a European-based Git hosting platform designed to provide a privacy-focused alternative to GitHub. The service aims to secure developer data by ensuring it remains strictly within the European Union, explicitly rejecting the reach of US legislation.
Currently in an invite-only beta phase, the platform is free to use during its initial period. Pushin.eu is built using the Elixir programming language and is hosted 100% in the EU on bare-metal servers provided by Scaleway in Paris, France. To facilitate migration, the platform offers a dedicated CLI tool called 'pun,' which allows users to import repositories from GitHub while preserving history, labels, issues, and merged pull requests. Additionally, the platform actively blocks "slop"—defined as low-effort contributions from reputation hunters—to protect maintainers from burnout.
The Legal Sanctuary
The launch arrives as developers express increasing concern over the US CLOUD Act, which permits US law enforcement to subpoena data held by US-based companies regardless of the server's physical location. By maintaining strict European ownership and infrastructure, Pushin.eu seeks to eliminate what it calls the "US kill-switch," operating solely under European law. This positioning is designed to provide a legal sanctuary for source code that must remain outside the jurisdiction of the United States.
Sovereignty Over AI
Beyond legal jurisdiction, Pushin.eu is positioning itself against the "AI-ification" of version control. While many major platforms have integrated generative AI into their core experience, Pushin.eu explicitly prohibits the use of user code to train AI models. This approach targets a specific niche of developers and organizations that require absolute sovereignty over their intellectual property and strict GDPR compliance, free from the trend of using private repositories as training data for large language models.
What to Watch
As the platform moves beyond its beta phase, the primary focus will be on its ability to scale its bare-metal infrastructure while maintaining its strict privacy guarantees. While the 'pun' tool simplifies the transition from GitHub, the long-term success of the platform depends on whether enough organizations are willing to migrate to a smaller, regional provider to avoid US legal reach and AI data harvesting.
