Relativity Park Simulates a World Where Light Moves at 5 km/h

A new interactive visualization allows users to experience time dilation and length contraction at human walking speeds.

Developer Dmitry Brant has released an interactive web-based simulation called "Relativity Park" that scales the speed of light down to a human pace. By setting the speed of light (c) to just 5 km/h, the tool allows users to experience complex relativistic effects that are normally invisible in daily life.

The simulation provides a physically accurate environment where users can observe light-travel delay, relativistic aberration, and relativistic beaming. It also demonstrates the Doppler effect through color shifts as the observer moves. To illustrate specific phenomena, Brant included lamp posts that demonstrate time dilation and a Ferris wheel and carousel moving at 75% of the speed of light to showcase Terrell rotation and length contraction.

The Physics of Scale

Special relativity describes the fundamental link between space and time for objects moving at a significant fraction of the speed of light. In the physical universe, light travels at approximately 300,000 km/s, meaning the distortions of space-time only become apparent at extreme velocities. By scaling this constant down to a brisk walk, the simulation makes these theoretical concepts tangible for the average user.

"I've always wanted to make a visualization where the speed of light was scaled down to human speeds, so that we could intuit relativistic effects with everyday objects," Brant stated in a post shared on Hacker News.

Bridging the Intuition Gap

Educational tools that visualize abstract physics help bridge the gap between rigid mathematical formulas and intuitive understanding. The counter-intuitive nature of the Lorentz factor—the mathematical heart of time dilation and length contraction—is often difficult to grasp through text alone. By allowing users to "walk" at relativistic speeds, the project makes these concepts accessible to non-physicists by grounding them in a familiar, interactive setting.

Open Access to Science

Relativity Park is designed as an open-source project, with the source code available on GitHub for others to study or expand. As the tool gains traction in communities like Hacker News, it serves as a case study in using web technologies to democratize scientific literacy. Future users can explore the simulation directly through the browser to see how the world warps when the universal speed limit is brought down to earth.
