Residential Proxy Networks Flagged as National Security Threat
Security researcher Jake Gold warns that proxy networks built on compromised home devices enable foreign influence operations and cyberattacks.
Residential proxy networks have become a critical blind spot in national cybersecurity, according to security researcher Jake Gold, who warns the infrastructure enables foreign adversaries to conduct influence operations indistinguishable from domestic activity.
The Core Problem
Unlike data center proxies, residential proxies route traffic through IP addresses assigned by Internet Service Providers to real homeowners. This makes malicious traffic extremely difficult to block without cutting off legitimate users.
"US residential proxies are the bane of the internet," Gold wrote. "They're the major source of social media manipulation and spam."
How Devices Get Compromised
The networks are built through multiple vectors. Free VPN apps resell user bandwidth without clear disclosure. Proxy SDKs embedded in free games and mobile apps silently convert devices into proxy nodes. Malware infects computers, routers, and IoT devices including smart TVs.
Many users remain unaware their bandwidth is being sold or used for scraping, ad fraud, and bypassing geo-restrictions. The malware used to install proxies can also expose citizens to data theft and surveillance, including audio and video recording capabilities.
LG Takes Action
In July 2026, LG announced a ban on residential proxy apps from its smart TV platform after security research revealed the scope of the problem. Security firm Spur found that over 42% of LG webOS apps contained residential proxy SDKs that could covertly turn televisions into proxy nodes.
The same month, Google and the FBI disrupted the NetNut residential proxy network, which was built on approximately 2 million compromised devices including smart TVs.
Why Blocking Fails
Services face a dilemma: blocking residential IP addresses would impact genuine customers. This asymmetry makes residential proxies a primary tool for social media manipulation, spam campaigns, and covert influence operations.
Gold, a software engineer with background at Bluesky, Google, and Docker, argues the proliferation of these networks creates systemic risk. Foreign adversaries can mask the origin of cyberattacks, making them appear as domestic user activity.
The Path Forward
Gold has called for the US government to treat residential proxy networks as a national security matter. While policy recommendations remain his individual views, the underlying technical threat has drawn attention from multiple security firms and law enforcement agencies.
The July 2026 actions against NetNut and LG's app store ban represent early regulatory and enforcement responses. However, the distributed nature of residential proxy infrastructure means new networks can emerge rapidly.
For now, the architecture of the internet itself—where residential IPs signal legitimacy—remains the vulnerability that makes the problem so difficult to solve.
