The Reticulum project has introduced a cryptography-based networking stack designed to enable the creation of sovereign, decentralized local and wide-area networks. This architecture allows users to establish independent communication systems that operate without central control or reliance on traditional internet infrastructure.

Unlike standard networking protocols, Reticulum does not use source addresses; packets contain no information regarding the origin address, machine, or person. According to the project's documentation, the system mandates strong, modern encryption by default, utilizing ephemeral keys and forward secrecy. Unencrypted links and packets are strictly prohibited. Furthermore, the network employs self-sovereign and portable addresses, which allow users to move physically across the network while remaining reachable.
