Salem Robotics, a Y Combinator S26 company, has launched a specialized software platform that provides mobile robots with the intelligence required for complex industrial inspections in hazardous environments. The system automates physically interactive tasks—such as leak detection and taking radiation "smears"—that have traditionally required manual human intervention.

The company's hardware-agnostic platform combines AI for semantic understanding with classical robotics for precise manipulation. This application layer can be deployed on existing robot hardware, including platforms from Boston Dynamics, or delivered as a complete turnkey system. A core technical differentiator is the software's ability to "close the loop" on inspection results; rather than simply confirming a robot reached a specific coordinate, the system verifies that the measurement itself is valid.

The Gap in Industrial Autonomy

Founded by CEO Caleb Horan and CTO Janak Panthi, the company leverages the founders' backgrounds as Ph.D. researchers from the University of Texas at Austin's Nuclear and Applied Robotics Laboratory. The pair bring 15 years of combined experience in the nuclear sector, including a decade developing autonomous robots at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

During their research, Horan and Panthi identified a critical gap: while robot hardware had advanced significantly, the software required to execute complete industrial procedures remained rudimentary. This often left operators relying on manual control for the most critical parts of an inspection. As the founders noted, successfully executing a trajectory does not guarantee a successful inspection, as detectors can be misaligned or geometry can differ from the digital model.

Market Impact and Scaling

By automating repetitive and dangerous physical inspections in high-consequence environments, Salem Robotics aims to reduce human exposure to hazardous materials and improve the consistency of data collection. This shift is intended to lower the operational burden of compliance-driven workflows within critical infrastructure, where precision is mandatory and errors carry high risks.

The company is initially targeting radiological inspections within the nuclear industry, with plans to expand the platform's reach into the oil, gas, and hazardous chemical sectors.

Commercial Deployment

Salem Robotics has established a tiered pricing structure for its deployments. Technical validations are priced between tens of thousands and over $100,000. For larger-scale industrial deployments, costs range from the low hundreds of thousands to approximately $500,000 per robot. As the company scales, the industry will be watching to see how effectively this software layer integrates with a wider variety of third-party hardware to standardize hazardous facility maintenance.
