Self-hosted email collapses as Google and Microsoft seize control of top domains
New research shows a steep decline in independent mail servers, creating a systemic dependency on two Big Tech providers.
The era of the independent mail server is rapidly ending for the internet's most popular websites. New research reveals a dramatic shift toward centralized infrastructure, leaving a significant portion of the web dependent on just two corporate entities for basic communication.
Analysis conducted by Artem Berezin, utilizing data from the OpenINTEL project and the Tranco domain popularity rankings, shows that self-hosted email servers among the top million domains plummeted from 44.6% in 2016 to 22.4% in 2026. In their place, Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 have established a dominant grip on the ecosystem. Together, these two providers now control 38.6% of detectable MX records for these domains, with Google Workspace accounting for 21.8% and Microsoft 365 holding 16.8%.
The infrastructure shift
To reach these conclusions, Berezin analyzed MX, SPF, and DMARC records to determine where mailboxes are hosted and how they are authenticated. The data highlights a broader struggle with security standards; despite mandates introduced by Google and Yahoo in 2024, only 46.9% of domains with DMARC records actually enforce a policy (p=quarantine or p=reject at pct=100). This means 53.1% of those domains either have no valid policy or are merely monitoring email without enforcement.
A systemic vulnerability
This centralization creates a precarious single point of failure for global communication. When a third of the internet's most popular domains rely on only two providers, any single outage, filtering update, or policy shift at Google or Microsoft propagates across the entire ecosystem instantly.
"When more than a third of popular domains depend on two providers to receive mail, an outage, a filtering change, or a policy decision at either one propagates through the whole ecosystem at once," Berezin stated.
The deliverability trap
Beyond the risk of outages, the decline of self-hosting creates what is known as a "deliverability trap." As the web becomes tuned for the proprietary systems of the "big two," independent operators—such as those using Postfix—find it increasingly difficult to get their mail accepted by the dominant providers.
This creates a feedback loop where independent admins are effectively forced to migrate to SaaS solutions simply to ensure their messages reach their destination. According to Berezin, "The fewer independent operators there are, the more the remaining ones inherit the deliverability problems of a world tuned for the big two."
What remains
While the trend toward centralization appears definitive, the remaining 22.4% of self-hosted servers represent a stubborn plateau of independent infrastructure. The industry now faces a future where the ability to send and receive email independently is no longer a standard technical capability, but a struggle against the filtering logic of a corporate duopoly.
