SiFive Launches BigSky SF-2U870 to Standardize High-Performance RISC-V Development

SiFive has introduced the BigSky SF-2U870, its first dedicated server platform designed specifically for high-performance RISC-V development. The system provides a standardized hardware target that allows software engineers to run continuous integration (CI) and develop applications without the typical firmware obstacles associated with emerging architectures.

The SF-2U870 is a standard 19-inch 2U server featuring 32 P870-D cores operating at 2.0 GHz. Technical specifications show the platform is equipped with 256 GB of DDR5-5600 memory and 64 lanes of PCIe 5.0, configured as four PCIe Gen5 x16 slots. Connectivity is handled via a 10/25 GbE OCP 3.0 NIC. Crucially, the system supports the RVA23 standard, which enables it to run Ubuntu 26.04 LTS and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 out of the box.

The RISC-V Infrastructure Gap

This release arrives during a period of significant momentum for high-performance RISC-V silicon. While companies such as Tenstorrent and Ventana—which was acquired by Qualcomm—have successfully taped out advanced chips, the ecosystem has struggled with a lack of stable, predictable hardware. Until now, a major bottleneck for the architecture has been the absence of standardized platforms that support the latest RVA23 specifications, often forcing developers to spend more time debugging hardware and firmware than writing software.

Lowering the Barrier to Entry

By providing what SiFive describes as a "boring"—or stable and predictable—development environment, the BigSky platform fills a critical gap in the RISC-V pipeline. This shift toward a "just works" experience is intended to lower the barrier for enterprise software developers to migrate to or build for the RISC-V architecture. By decoupling software creation from the instabilities of early-stage hardware, SiFive is positioning the SF-2U870 as a bridge that allows the software ecosystem to mature in parallel with the silicon.

As the industry watches the deployment of the SF-2U870, the focus will shift to how quickly the broader software community adopts the RVA23 standard.
