In the series titled "Why Do Programming Languages Rise and Fall?", author and long-time technical book editor Andrew Oram argues that the industry's obsession with "feature wars"—the comparison of language specifications and capabilities—often misses the real reason for a tool's success. According to Oram, the factors that lead developers to flock to or abandon a specific language are primarily social rather than technical.

Simon Peyton Jones is quoted in the analysis stating that a language's adoption is "very weakly connected to its technical merits."
