SolarWindow Debuts Ultra-Thin ElectroFlex Solar Film for OEM Integration

SolarWindow Technologies has released ElectroFlex, an ultra-thin, self-adhesive solar film designed for seamless integration into vehicles, marine vessels, and buildings. The product aims to shift solar power away from bulky standalone panels and toward integrated surfaces.

The ElectroFlex film features a total stack thickness of just 0.85 mm, making it up to 47 times thinner and 5.5 times lighter than conventional solar panels when including traditional racking. The technology utilizes a proprietary composite laminate paired with high-efficiency interdigitated back-contact cells. This configuration allows the film to achieve a cell efficiency of 24.4% and a power-to-weight ratio of 33.1 W/lb.

The Shift Toward Invisible Energy

Based in Scottsdale, Arizona, SolarWindow Technologies focuses on "invisible energy" solutions that blend power generation into existing infrastructure. While ElectroFlex is now commercially available, the company is simultaneously expanding its research into transparent energy. SolarWindow is currently developing "LiquidElectricity," a transparent coating for glass windows, in collaboration with the National Laboratory of the Rockies and the US Department of Energy.

Impact on Mobility and Architecture

By removing the requirement for heavy structural supports and frames, ElectroFlex allows solar generation to be applied to surfaces previously deemed unsuitable. This is particularly significant for the mobility sector, where the film can conform to the curved roofs of vehicles or the hulls of marine vessels without adding significant weight or altering aerodynamics. In the Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) sector, the self-adhesive nature of the film enables lightweight architectural elements to generate power without the aesthetic or structural burden of traditional racking systems.

Future Outlook

The launch of ElectroFlex positions SolarWindow to target OEM partnerships where solar is a built-in feature rather than an add-on. Industry observers will be watching for the first large-scale commercial deployments in the automotive and marine sectors, as well as the progress of the LiquidElectricity project, which could further expand the utility of solar energy to standard window glass. By integrating power generation directly into the skin of a product, SolarWindow is challenging the traditional paradigm of solar installation, moving toward a future where energy harvesting is an inherent property of the materials used in construction and transport.
