Spline v2 Rebuilds 3D Editor for AI Agents with MCP Integration

Spline has released v2, a complete rebuild of its 3D editor designed for a future of AI-driven development. The update transforms the software from a manual design tool into an agent-friendly platform where humans and AI collaboratively manage 3D environments.

At the core of the update is the introduction of a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. This integration allows external AI agents—including Claude Code, Cursor, and ChatGPT—to drive the editor using the same tools as Spline's internal AI agent. This enables autonomous agents to directly manipulate 3D scenes and write the accompanying code required for interactivity. To streamline this process, the new desktop app can automatically detect AI tools to connect via the MCP server without manual setup.

A Technical Overhaul

The v2 rebuild shifts the editor's foundation to WebGPU as the default renderer, maintaining WebGL as a fallback. This transition improves overall performance and enables high-fidelity visual features such as real-time lighting and reflections. The technical update also introduces PBR materials, HDR color pipelines, and a new Hair System. Additionally, Spline has rewritten its Booleans, which are now approximately four times faster than in previous versions.

To support these capabilities, the user interface has been redesigned into three distinct modes: Edit, which serves as the primary canvas; Code, a full editor featuring Spline API completions; and Preview.

The Shift to Agentic Design

This release arrives as AI agents evolve from simple text generation toward active tool-use and environment manipulation. By exposing the editor's internals via MCP, Spline is moving away from a purely GUI-based experience. The goal is to create a workflow where the scene graph and codebase can be edited in real-time by both a human designer and an AI agent.

This shift significantly lowers the barrier to creating complex, interactive 3D web experiences. By allowing AI to handle the more tedious aspects of 3D scene assembly and interactivity coding, the platform effectively transforms into a programmable environment that can be operated by autonomous software.

As more developers integrate the Spline MCP server into their AI workflows, the industry will likely see a rise in rapidly prototyped 3D web interfaces. The primary point of interest moving forward will be how these agent-driven workflows impact the traditional role of the 3D designer and whether this model of "agent-friendly" software becomes the standard for other creative suites.
