According to the Tailwind CSS Blog, the framework has reached massive scale, with over 110 million installations per week. As part of the transition, Tailwind Labs is shifting away from its independent commercial business model. The company is closing sign-ups for new customers for paid offerings, including Tailwind Plus and ui.sh, to prioritize development at Shopify. Existing commercial customers will maintain their current access to these services.
The Evolution of a Standard
Adam Wathan launched Tailwind CSS over nine years ago to simplify the process of building beautiful user interfaces. Since its inception, it has evolved from a niche tool into an industry standard adopted by some of the world's largest tech platforms, including ChatGPT, X, Cloudflare, and Reddit. While Tailwind Labs previously operated a business centered on paid templates and commercial products, the team is now pivoting toward a model where the framework is developed in direct service of a massive application.
