The Forgotten Glyphs: How Early Computing Symbols Vanished from the Keyboard
A look at the obscure Unicode characters and legacy hardware that once defined the visual language of data entry.
The modern keyboard is a landscape of standardized letters and a few surviving icons, but the early era of computing was defined by a far more experimental visual language. As hardware evolved, many of the symbols that once guided users through technical operations were relegated to the depths of the Unicode standard, effectively vanishing from public sight.
Among these lost icons are specific characters located in the 'Miscellaneous Technical' block of Unicode. These include the Insertion Symbol (⎀, U+2380), which historically corresponded to the Insert key, as well as the Continuous Underline Symbol (⎁, U+2381) and the Discontinuous Underline Symbol (⎂, U+2382). While the Insert key remains a staple of the PC layout, its original symbolic representation (⎀) has been almost entirely replaced by plain text or omitted entirely in favor of minimalist design.
The Legacy of IBM Hardware
This shift toward minimalism stands in contrast to the hardware of the mid-20th century, where symbols were essential for navigating specialized machines. The IBM Selectric, a highly successful line of electric typewriters introduced in 1961, brought a new level of precision to document creation and established a precedent for how physical keys could represent complex formatting actions.
Following this, the IBM 1130 was introduced in 1965. Designed as a low-cost computer tailored for technical markets, the 1130 represented a bridge between the typewriter era and the digital age. These machines relied on a distinct set of iconography to help operators manage data and technical inputs, creating a visual shorthand that was necessary before the advent of graphical user interfaces (GUIs) and on-screen prompts.
Why the Symbols Vanished
The disappearance of these symbols is a byproduct of the industry's move toward universal standardization. In the early days of computing, different manufacturers often employed proprietary symbols to denote specific functions. As the PC market consolidated around the IBM PC standard and later the Windows and Mac ecosystems, the need for specialized technical glyphs diminished.
For the average user, a key labeled "Insert" is more intuitive than a symbol like ⎀. As software began to handle the logic of data insertion and underlining through menus and toolbars, the physical symbols became redundant. The transition from hardware-based signaling to software-based guidance rendered these glyphs obsolete, moving them from the plastic of the keyboard to the digital archives of the Unicode Consortium.
The Digital Archive
Today, these symbols exist primarily as historical curiosities for typography enthusiasts and software developers. While they are no longer printed on keyboards, their presence in the Unicode standard ensures that legacy documents can still be rendered correctly and that the lineage of computing iconography is preserved.
What remains to be seen is whether the current trend toward minimalist, "blank" keyboard aesthetics will lead to the total erasure of functional symbols, or if a new set of icons will emerge to represent the increasingly complex shortcuts of modern operating systems.
