TreasuryDirect to Mandate ID.me Login for All Account Access by October 2026

The U.S. government platform for Treasury securities is shifting authentication to a private identity provider to modernize security.

TechNewsReel Newsroom · August 15, 2026

TreasuryDirect will replace its traditional login system with ID.me, a private government-verified identity provider, to modernize security for users of U.S. Treasury securities. The transition will become mandatory for all customers to maintain account access by October 28, 2026.

According to official TreasuryDirect documentation, the rollout begins in phases. Users may optionally begin adopting the ID.me login method starting September 13, 2026. However, by the October 28 deadline, the system will be the sole method for accessing accounts. To set up an ID.me account, users are required to provide a Social Security Number (SSN) and a valid government-issued photo ID, such as a passport or driver's license.

The Role of TreasuryDirect

TreasuryDirect serves as the official U.S. government platform for the purchase and redemption of Treasury securities, including savings bonds. For years, the platform has managed the authentication of sensitive financial assets for a wide range of users, from individual savers to institutional accounts with significant holdings. The current move is part of a broader effort to allow users to access multiple government services using a single, verified digital identity.

Implications of Private Authentication

While ID.me is used by various federal agencies, it is a private business rather than a government-run service. This shift moves the authentication process for federal financial accounts from a government-managed system to a third-party provider. This transition raises questions regarding the privatization of government identity verification and the security implications of relying on a non-government entity to gate access to federal assets.

What to Watch

As the September 13 optional window approaches, users will need to ensure their government-issued identification is current to avoid lockout during the mandatory transition in October. It remains to be seen how the Treasury will handle users who cannot or will not utilize a private third-party provider for identity verification, as the current mandate specifies ID.me as the required method for maintaining account access.
