UIDAI Launches Face Authentication SDK to Simplify Digital Onboarding

New SDK and testing sandbox remove the need for separate apps, reducing friction for banks and fintechs.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched a Face Authentication Software Development Kit (SDK) and a dedicated testing Sandbox to simplify digital identity verification. The move aims to remove significant user friction during the onboarding process for financial services and government programs.

Unveiled at the Global Fintech Fest 2026, the SDK allows banks, fintechs, and government agencies to embed face-based Aadhaar authentication directly into their native Android and iOS applications. This eliminates the previous requirement for users to download and switch to a separate 'FaceRD' application to complete verification. According to a Ministry of Electronics and IT release, the SDK enables a "smoother, single-app authentication experience."

To ensure security, the SDK integrates AI/ML-based liveness detection and anti-spoofing features directly into the mobile apps. Sanjeev Yadav, Director at UIDAI, stated that by bringing AI-based liveness detection and instant authentication to personal phones, the agency has "completely vanished the friction."

Improving Developer Integration

Alongside the SDK, UIDAI introduced a Sandbox environment that allows developers to test critical workflows without needing external biometric hardware. This environment supports the testing of user provisioning, consent, face capture, and various failure scenarios, including spoofing attempts and network timeouts. To further assist the Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance (BFSI) sector, UIDAI also released a 'Playbook on ease of Onboarding' to guide entities joining the authentication ecosystem.

Scaling Digital Identity

This update builds on the Aadhaar Face Authentication system originally launched in 2021. Since its inception, the system has been adopted by nearly 200 entities and has processed more than 500 crore transactions. By moving away from the 'APK model'—which required application switching—UIDAI is targeting a reduction in user drop-offs during the Know Your Customer (KYC) process.

Long-term Infrastructure and Security

Beyond the immediate SDK launch, UIDAI is preparing for future systemic threats. The agency is implementing post-quantum cryptography as part of a 10-year technology roadmap, citing concerns that current public-key cryptography may become vulnerable within three to five years.

Additionally, UIDAI is developing its own "hyperscaler-like" infrastructure. This strategic shift is intended to maintain strict data sovereignty by avoiding reliance on commercial hyperscalers for its core operations. These combined efforts signal a broader push toward a more secure, sovereign, and seamless digital identity framework for India's millions of users.
