Walmart is fundamentally restructuring its software engineering workflow by transitioning from experimental AI assistants to deeply integrated agentic platforms. This shift, detailed by Walmart software engineer Tianyu Zhang, marks a move away from simple chat-based tools toward AI agents capable of executing complex, multi-step development tasks.

Central to this evolution are internal platforms including Code Puppy and Wibey. Wibey operates as an agentic "super agent" that integrates directly into developer environments, including Visual Studio, Slack, and command-line interfaces. Unlike basic assistants, Wibey can scaffold entire services by generating tailored starter kits and automate critical infrastructure tasks, such as resolving CI/CD pipeline failures. Currently, Walmart finds AI most effective for documentation, code reviews, and unit testing, where the tools excel at identifying overlooked edge cases.

The Rise of the Agentic Workflow

This transition mirrors a broader industry trend where massive enterprises build proprietary tooling to overcome the limitations of general-purpose AI. By developing internal systems, Walmart can better manage company-specific context and avoid the usage quotas associated with external providers.
