Technically known as IEEE 802.11bn, Wi-Fi 8 is centering its development on a concept called "Ultra High Reliability" (UHR). According to XDA Developers, this represents a strategic pivot away from the pursuit of raw peak throughput that defined previous generations. Instead of focusing on maximum gigabit speeds, the 802.11bn standard aims to reduce latency and improve overall connection stability, particularly when operating in congested wireless environments.
The Shift in Wireless Strategy
For several generations, the evolution of Wi-Fi—including the recent Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 standards—has been characterized by a race to increase maximum data rates and expand available bandwidth. While these upgrades looked impressive on spec sheets, they often failed to translate to a better user experience in typical home settings. Users frequently encounter significant speed drops and instability caused by signal interference and network congestion, meaning the theoretical maximums were rarely achieved in practice.
Why Reliability Trumps Speed
This change in direction comes as the nature of home networking evolves. The modern household now supports a growing number of simultaneous connected devices, many of which require constant, steady streams of data. Furthermore, the rise of latency-sensitive applications, such as cloud gaming and augmented or virtual reality (AR/VR), has changed the requirements for a "fast" connection.
