AI Memory Shortage Pushes Apple Toward China, Triggering Senate Backlash

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence has triggered a severe memory chip shortage that is forcing major hardware companies to make precarious supply chain trade-offs. Lawmakers have urged Apple to abandon its efforts to source from these specific Chinese firms, citing significant national security risks associated with using blacklisted suppliers.

The conflict over Apple's sourcing highlights the growing tension between the corporate need for rapid AI scaling and the U.S. government's desire to reduce reliance on Chinese technology. The proposed legislation aims to empower local communities to regulate or reject the construction of AI data centers when they are situated near residential areas.
