On March 1, 2026, Iranian Shahed 136 drones struck two AWS data centers located in the United Arab Emirates, with a third facility in Bahrain hit shortly thereafter. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for the operations, asserting that the facilities were legitimate targets because they supported U.S. military and intelligence activities. The strikes resulted in structural damage and power outages, triggering widespread service disruptions for payment platforms and banks across the Persian Gulf.

The Dual-Use Dilemma
