KOSPI Faces Volatility Test: Big Tech Earnings, FOMC Decision Converge

South Korean markets face a gauntlet of catalysts this week that could swing the index hundreds of points.

Seoul's benchmark KOSPI faces a volatility test this week as major U.S. tech earnings and a Federal Reserve decision converge to challenge the AI-driven rally that has defined 2026.

Earnings Gauntlet

Between July 27 and 31, investors will receive earnings reports from Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, and Apple—the U.S. hyperscalers whose capital expenditure decisions directly shape demand for Korean memory chips. Microsoft reports July 29, the same day SK hynix announces its quarterly results.

The Korean market has become tightly coupled to the AI investment cycle. Any upward revision in hyperscaler capex guidance, combined with a surprise earnings beat from SK hynix, could trigger a sharp rebound. Analysts note that confirmation of shareholder-return policies would further support the index.

Fed Decision and Trade Headwinds

The Federal Open Market Committee meets July 28–29, with the interest rate decision scheduled for July 29 at 2:00 PM ET. Economists caution that this FOMC is likely to maintain monetary policy uncertainty rather than present a clear direction.

Compounding the risk, the Trump administration finalized tariffs of 10% to 12.5% on 60 trading partner countries on July 23, invoking Section 301 of the Trade Act. The move adds another layer of trade friction for export-dependent economies.

Market Whipsaw

Recent trading illustrates the fragility. The KOSPI dropped to 6,500 points on July 20, recovered to 7,000 on July 23, then fell below 6,700 on July 24. The swings reflect competing forces: overheated AI investment concerns, Middle East tensions driving oil prices higher, and fluctuating U.S. Treasury yields.

Defensive Pivots

Regulatory changes are also reshaping trading behavior. Starting July 31, the basic deposit requirement for leveraged ETFs tied to Samsung Electronics and SK hynix will increase from 10 million won to 30 million won—a move expected to dampen speculative volume in the market's most volatile instruments.

If hawkish Fed guidance or escalating trade barriers dominate the narrative, analysts recommend rotating into defensive sectors such as defense, biotechnology, and high-dividend stocks. The week's outcome will signal whether the AI thesis remains intact or whether a deeper correction lies ahead.
