Stanford Law to Launch Legal Engineering Academy in 2027

The new residential program will train legal leaders to redesign professional workflows for the AI era.

Stanford Law School is launching the Legal Engineering Academy, a selective residential program designed to train legal professionals to lead AI adoption. Starting in summer 2027, the initiative aims to move the industry beyond basic tool awareness toward a fundamental redesign of legal work.

The two-week course will accept an inaugural cohort of approximately 50 attorneys, executives, and organizational leaders. Developed as a joint effort between the Stanford Law AI Initiative and the school's Executive Education program, the academy focuses on AI strategy, governance frameworks, and workflow redesign. The program was shaped by a founding advisory board comprising roughly a dozen experts from academia, law firms, corporate legal departments, and AI companies.

The Shift to Legal Engineering

The academy arrives as the legal sector struggles to bridge the gap between the availability of AI tools and the practical implementation of those tools within complex organizational structures. While many firms have adopted AI software, few have restructured their internal processes to maximize the technology's utility.

According to Julian Nyarko, a professor of law and co-director of the Stanford Law School AI Initiative, simply using an AI tool is not equivalent to understanding how to redesign work around it. The program is built on the premise that the technical capability of AI must be integrated with the specific governance and organizational requirements of professional legal practice.

Industry Implications

This shift toward "legal engineering" signals a change in the required skill set for legal leadership. The focus is moving away from the selection of software and toward the architecture of the legal process itself.

Christopher Kercher, a trial lawyer and advisory board member, notes that choosing a tool is the easiest part of integrating AI into real legal work. He argues that the bulk of the effort is actually spent building the workflows and assembling the necessary context around them, which defines the practical application of legal engineering.

Future Outlook

As the 2027 launch approaches, the legal industry will be watching to see if this specialized training can create a new class of hybrid leaders capable of navigating both technical and legal domains. The success of the inaugural cohort will likely determine how other academic institutions approach the intersection of law and engineering.
