Algeria Targets 30,000 AI Engineers by 2030 in Sovereign Tech Push

Algeria has approved an inter-ministerial roadmap to integrate artificial intelligence into its public services while aggressively pursuing technological independence. The strategy aims to reduce reliance on foreign technology by prioritizing national control over AI infrastructure and data.
According to Higher Education and Scientific Research Minister Kamel Baddari, the plan marks a transition from theoretical policy development to the operational implementation of concrete programs. The roadmap is built upon four primary pillars: the adoption of sovereign open-source AI models, the development of high-performance computing infrastructure, the use of domestic data storage, and the strengthening of security protections for government AI applications.
To support this infrastructure, the government has set an ambitious human capital target to train and develop 30,000 AI engineers by 2030. Initial progress is already visible through the National Higher School of Artificial Intelligence (ENSIA), which has graduated its first cohort of 105 students. Furthermore, the state has launched an AI and cybersecurity startup cluster at the Abdelhafid Ihaddaden Scientific and Technology Hub in Sidi Abdellah, designed to bridge the gap between academic research and industrial application.
