Anthropic Secures $9.1 Billion Compute Deal With Bitcoin Miner Riot Platforms
A 20-year lease for 191 megawatts of capacity in Texas signals a strategic pivot for Riot toward AI infrastructure.
Bitcoin mining firm Riot Platforms has signed a landmark 20-year data center lease agreement with AI lab Anthropic valued at $9.1 billion. The deal secures critical computing power for the maker of the Claude AI models, marking a significant shift in how crypto-infrastructure assets are utilized in the AI race.
Under the terms of the agreement, which runs through June 2048, Anthropic will gain access to 191 megawatts (MW) of critical IT capacity at Riot's Rockdale campus in Texas. To support the construction required for this expansion, Riot has secured a $573 million interim financing facility from Morgan Stanley. The contract also includes two optional five-year extensions that could potentially increase the total value of the deal to approximately $16.1 billion.
The Infrastructure Pivot
This partnership highlights a growing trend where Bitcoin mining companies leverage industrial footprints to serve the AI sector. Mining operations typically possess three assets currently in high demand: vast tracts of land, established high-voltage power grid connections, and specialized cooling infrastructure. As frontier AI labs face severe electricity shortages and compute bottlenecks, these grid-connected sites have become strategic prizes.
Riot is not limiting its AI ambitions to a single partner. The company has already established a relationship with AMD, bringing its total contracted AI capacity at the Rockdale site to 241 MW. Riot CEO Jason Les described the Anthropic agreement as a "defining moment" in the company's evolution into a developer of large-scale data centers.
Market Implications
For the broader market, this deal represents a fundamental repricing of Bitcoin mining stocks. Traditionally, these companies have been valued based on Bitcoin price volatility and hash rate metrics. By securing long-term, multi-billion dollar leases, Riot is shifting its valuation toward that of a stable AI infrastructure provider, diversifying revenue streams away from the cyclical nature of cryptocurrency.
Furthermore, the deal underscores that power access has become a primary competitive moat in the artificial intelligence industry. For labs like Anthropic, locking in massive amounts of power capacity decades in advance is a strategic necessity to ensure the continued training and deployment of next-generation models.
Looking Ahead
As Riot continues to build out the Rockdale campus, the industry will be watching to see if other miners follow suit by converting mining farms into AI hubs. While the primary lease is set, the eventual exercise of the five-year extensions will serve as a barometer for Anthropic's long-term compute requirements and Riot's ability to scale its infrastructure to meet them.
