Netivei Israel, in partnership with the Ministry of Transportation, has deployed approximately 170 AI-powered adaptive traffic light systems across the country's intercity roads. The initiative replaces rigid, pre-programmed signal schedules with dynamic systems capable of responding to live traffic conditions.

Unlike traditional signals that rely on historical data, these systems utilize computer vision and cameras to analyze real-time demand. The technology reduces travel time by an average of 25 seconds per vehicle at a single intersection. For drivers passing through multiple adaptive signals, these cumulative savings can reach up to 10 minutes per trip. A targeted analysis of 25 specific intersections revealed an average saving of 400 vehicle-hours per day per intersection.

The Shift to Adaptive Infrastructure

Israel's road networks have faced increasing congestion, often exacerbated by the limitations of traditional traffic management. Standard signals operate on fixed timers that cannot account for sudden disruptions such as accidents, road construction, or unexpected shifts in traffic volume. By integrating AI, Netivei Israel is optimizing existing road flow through digital solutions rather than relying exclusively on the construction of new physical infrastructure.

The technology was developed by ITC, working in close collaboration with several of Netivei Israel's internal divisions, including Engineering R&D, Traffic Management, Operations, and Maintenance.

Economic and Environmental Impact

The transition to AI-driven traffic management is part of a broader move toward "smart city" infrastructure. Beyond the immediate convenience for drivers, the reduction in idling and stop-and-go traffic is expected to lower fuel consumption and decrease air pollution.

The economic implications are substantial. Based on the time saved by motorists, installing this technology at just 100 intersections could generate more than half a billion shekels in annual economic benefits. By recovering thousands of productivity hours previously lost to congestion, the system provides a measurable boost to the national economy.

As Netivei Israel continues to evaluate the performance of the initial 170 systems, the focus will likely shift toward scaling the deployment across more of the national network. The success of these adaptive signals serves as a proof-of-concept for how AI can maximize the efficiency of existing assets.
