Beijing Robot Games: Humanoids Outpace World Records but Struggle with Control

Over 2,000 robots competed in the second World Humanoid Robot Games, revealing a stark divide between raw physical power and precise autonomy.

The second World Humanoid Robot Games took place from August 22–26, 2026, at Beijing’s National Speed Skating Oval. The event demonstrated that while humanoid hardware can now exceed human physical limits, significant gaps remain in AI-driven perception and dexterity.

This year's competition saw a massive scale-up in participation, featuring 2,056 robots from 666 teams across 16 countries. The field was overwhelmingly dominated by Chinese participants, who accounted for 641 of the teams and 1,975 of the robots—approximately 96% of the total entries. The event consisted of 51 distinct contests, split between 30 sports and performance events and 21 scenario-based challenges, such as restaurant service, EV charging, and warehouse sorting. According to technology partner Huawei, more than 40% of these events required the robots to operate with full autonomy.

The Speed Gap

The most striking results occurred in the athletic sprints, where machines officially outpaced the fastest humans in history. Two robots clocked 100-meter sprint times faster than Usain Bolt's world record of 9.58 seconds, with one recording a time of 9.39 seconds. In the 400-meter event, a robot finished in 39.7 seconds, comfortably beating the human world record of 43.03 seconds.

However, this raw speed came with a lack of control. While the robots could accelerate beyond human capability, they struggled with braking and precision. Reports indicated that some sprinters were unable to stop effectively after crossing the finish line, slamming into safety mats. This highlighted a recurring theme of the games: the difficulty of managing the "small imperfections" of the physical world.

Industrial Ambitions

The rapid growth of the games reflects a broader strategic push by China to transition humanoid robotics from laboratory research into a viable industrial sector. The inaugural 2025 games featured only 280 teams and roughly 500 robots; the 2026 expansion suggests an effort to leverage China's existing automotive and electronics supply chains to create a comprehensive ecosystem for rapid iterative testing.

Industry experts noted that the increased intensity of the competition has placed new pressures on hardware. Robotics investor Xu Qiaosheng observed that the current level of competition places significant demands on thermal dissipation and battery management capabilities.

The Path to Utility

Despite the record-breaking speeds, the industry remains focused on the transition from performance to utility. Yu Chao, CEO of Lumos Robotics, emphasized that simply running and jumping does not improve efficiency, stating that real value is only found when robots can function in end-user scenarios.

As the sector moves forward, the focus is expected to shift from raw athletic benchmarks to the refinement of manipulation and autonomous decision-making. The Beijing games proved that the hardware for the future is already here, but the intelligence required to navigate a complex human environment is still catching up.
