Beijing's AGI Bar offers free DeepSeek tokens to developers in tech hub
An independent developer has opened a themed hub in Zhongguancun where AI compute is treated as a public utility.
An independent AI developer has opened a themed social hub in Beijing's Zhongguancun district to provide a physical meeting point for the city's growing community of researchers and students. The AGI Bar serves as both a networking venue and a compute provider, offering free access to AI tools alongside low-cost drinks.
Founded by developer Song De, the bar is located in the Haidian district near Peking and Tsinghua universities. The establishment features a signature drink called "AGI," priced at 9.9 yuan (approximately $1.50), which consists mostly of foam as a satirical nod to the current AI bubble. Beyond the menu, the bar provides customers with free DeepSeek tokens—specifically for the V4 Flash model—via the venue's WiFi. This compute power is delivered by Nvidia workstations displayed on-site for patrons to see.
The Silicon Valley of China
Zhongguancun is widely regarded as China's equivalent to Silicon Valley, serving as the epicenter for the country's high-tech industry and home to elite academic institutions. The bar's identity is deeply rooted in this environment, utilizing a Chinese name that puns on "knowledge distillation," a term that refers to both the process of refining liquor and the AI technique of transferring knowledge from a large model to a smaller one. By positioning itself in this neighborhood, the bar has become a neutral ground where researchers from competing labs and universities can gather to discuss industry trends.
AI as a Public Utility
The venture reflects a broader cultural shift in China toward "vibe coding" and the democratization of high-end AI tools. Song De views the provision of compute not as a traditional business service, but as a fundamental resource. "We say AI is a future public utility like water, electricity, and the internet," Song said. "AI should be like WiFi."
However, this philosophy creates a significant financial strain. The cost of maintaining Nvidia hardware and providing free tokens, combined with a generous policy of giving away drinks, has left the business struggling. Song admits the bar is currently losing money, as the volume of complimentary drinks provided to the community far outweighs those actually sold to customers.
The Path Forward
As the open-weight AI ecosystem continues to expand, the AGI Bar highlights the tension between the high cost of hardware and the desire for open access to compute. While the business model remains unsustainable in its current form, the bar serves as a living experiment in how AI infrastructure might be integrated into social spaces. Observers will be watching to see if such "compute hubs" can find a viable financial path or if they will remain passion projects funded by independent developers.
