Epic Unveils Ergo Framework to Turn EHRs Into Active AI Intelligence Layers
The healthcare software giant introduces a no-code agent factory and a massive predictive model to automate clinical and administrative workflows.
Epic Systems is transitioning the electronic health record (EHR) from a passive data repository into an active reasoning system. At its annual Users Group Meeting, the company unveiled Ergo, a healthcare intelligence framework designed to integrate AI agents and predictive modeling directly into clinical workflows.
Central to this expansion is the "Agent Factory," a no-code platform that allows healthcare organizations to build, run, and monitor their own AI agents without writing software. While the platform is slated for wide availability in 2027, some organizations are already seeing results. ECU Health utilized the Agent Factory to create an AI agent for summarizing transfer center requests, a move that has saved the organization an estimated 20 hours per week.
Alongside the agent platform, Epic introduced Curiosity, a generative AI model powered by the company's Cosmos database. Curiosity is trained on a massive dataset comprising 310 million patients and 21 billion encounters, allowing it to forecast critical patient outcomes such as hospital readmission and stroke risk. This predictive capability complements Epic's existing AI ecosystem, which includes Art for clinical tasks, Emmie for patient-facing interactions, and Penny, a copilot for the revenue cycle.
The Shift to Foundational AI
Epic is positioning itself as the foundational layer for healthcare AI to compete directly with third-party startups. By embedding automation within the EHR, Epic leverages the real-world data of the Cosmos platform to provide insights that typically exceed what is available in published medical studies. CEO Judy Faulkner emphasized the flexibility of the new tools, stating, "You can take it, shape it, make it."
Industry Implications
This shift toward an integrated "agentic" architecture aims to tackle the systemic issue of clinician burnout. By automating labor-intensive tasks like charting and prior authorization, Epic intends to reduce the administrative burden on providers. Furthermore, the use of population-level predictive analytics through Curiosity could shift care from reactive treatment to proactive prevention, potentially improving long-term patient outcomes across the health system.
The Path Forward
Despite the technological leaps, the transition remains a race against evolving patient expectations. Epic Executive Carl Dvorak noted the urgency of the shift, arguing that the industry must find a "pathway to our AI utopia" before patients lose trust in the health system as their primary source of medical information. As the industry watches the 2027 rollout of the Agent Factory, the primary focus will be whether these tools can be scaled safely across diverse clinical environments without compromising data integrity.
